What is MassCOP?

The Massachusetts Coalition of Police (MassCOP) is the largest law enforcement Union in our Commonwealth. We represent more than 4,800 members working in over 182 cities and towns across Massachusetts.

We are 100% labor attorneys who provide representation for our members in good standing at the negotiation table, arbitration cases, policy review, internal affairs and much, much more. We DO NOT use Business Agents or Field Representatives like other parent unions.

Who does MassCOP represent?

MassCOP only represents Police Officers and 911 Dispatchers here in our Commonwealth.

What legal services does MassCOP provide/offer to its members?

If you join our family, your Local will be assigned two attorneys, a primary and a secondary attorney, from the prestigious law firm of Sandulli Grace, PC.   Sandulli Grace, PC provides representation in the field of labor law and labor relations.  In addition to MassCOP, they represent such labor unions as the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association, Massachusetts Teachers Association, and many others.

Sandulli Grace, PC has an experienced staff of 14 labor attorneys ready to help.  There are other occasions where we utilize several other pre-selected labor law firms.

What is MassCOP’s Critical Incident Hotline that is available 24/7/365?

When you activate our Critical Incident Hotline, within minutes, you will receive responses from several MassCOP officials. and more importantly, our attorneys who are on call 24/7/365.  In most cases, depending on the nature of the incident, a Union attorney will physically respond to the scene.  If a criminal attorney is needed, our labor attorneys, working together with our Union officials, will confer with our legal defense criminal attorneys.  This service is available for all MassCOP members in good standing and inclusive with your weekly dues.

What is MassCOP’s PEER Support Program that is available 24/7/365?

MassCOP is the first statewide police Union in the country to offer these services to members. It is inclusive of your dues as well. Coverage is included for matters involving stress, alcohol, drugs, domestic issues, suicidal thoughts, and many other various issues.  It is 100% anonymous unless you authorize otherwise.

When and how can you speak with your assigned attorneys?

Generally, all you need to do is contact your Area Vice President who in turn will send you a link via email to our Legal Tracking Form. You simply complete this one-minute form and submit it. Your issue will then be provided a tracking number which allows you to contact your assigned attorney. In addition, MassCOP also has an In-house Counsel who is also available to help our Locals with any issues.

Do you get an “attorney of the day” or are you assigned specific attorneys?

Each of MassCOP’s Locals will be assigned two attorneys, a primary and a secondary attorney, from the prestigious law firm of Sandulli Grace, PC located in Boston. You will have the same attorneys over the years of service.

What are the weekly dues?

Dues are $14 per week, per member, for 52 weeks for a total of $728 a year. This is inclusive of your legal defense coverage and all legal fees. There are cases where the dues will be $18 per week, per person, for Locals with eight or less members.

What about MassCOP’s Legal Defense Plan, is there an additional cost similar to other Legal Defense Programs available to Police Officers?

MassCOP’s Legal Defense Plan is provided to all members at no cost additional fees. It is inclusive of your weekly dues. Most legal defense plans charge $300 per year, per member. Take that from our $728 and your Union dues are closer to $428 or $8 per week.

What other type of services does MassCOP make available to its members?

MassCOP holds regional trainings sessions throughout the state, generally three to four times a year. Every other year, we host an intense one-day training event. These events are all taught and lead by our labor attorneys working with MassCOP’s Executive Officers.

We also have a MassCOP Legislative Team working at the Massachusetts State House. They are dedicated Police Officers who represent us in their advocating and lobbying efforts on House, Senate and Governor Bills relating to our profession, working conditions, retirement and many other issues.

What kind of events does MassCOP offer to its members?

MassCOP hosts its annual 3-day convention down on the Cape, as well as a biennial Presidents Dinner.

How are dues paid?

All new locals are required to be on direct deposit or direct check from their city or town. Another option for payment could be ACH after approval from the MassCOP office.
