The Massachusetts Coalition of Police (MassCOP) is strongly committed to constructive legislation that brings about positive and productive reform to policing and law enforcement across the Commonwealth.
We have spent weeks advocating for important measures such as a comprehensive process for certifying all police officers in Massachusetts, enhanced standardized training and a statewide accreditation process for all police departments, and a clear, statewide prohibition on the use of excessive force by police officers.
Our 4,300 members are sworn to protect and serve in 157 cities and towns across the Commonwealth – and we believe that oath extends to ensuring public confidence in law enforcement. Impactful reforms achieved through an open and transparent process support that important objective.

Some members of the Massachusetts Senate – while debating these measures as contained in S. 2800 -have become an obstacle to this important reform by continuing to press for damaging initiatives such as the removal of qualified immunity from civil lawsuits for police officers acting in good faith, and the denial of our due process rights in the workplace.
These are direct attacks on the men and women serve the Commonwealth and its communities in law enforcement, and their families.
While S. 2800 was brought to debate without any public hearing, today we are urging all citizens of Massachusetts to voice their support for the important reforms that will help ensure confidence in law enforcement – and to voice strong opposition to the denial of basic workplace rights and civil protections for police officers that all other public employees are afforded.
